Did you know nearly 75% of Social Security recipients 65+ depend on Social Security for all or most of their monthly income? Not to mention, 23 million Americans over the age of 60 are economically insecure – living at or below 250% of the federal poverty level. These older adults struggle each day with rising housing and healthcare bills, inadequate nutrition, lack of access to transportation, diminished savings and job loss.
To bring awareness to these shocking statistics, UNIMED recently partnered with St. Vincent de Paul Society for the 6th Annual St. Gabriel Conference Friends of the Poor 5k, a local community event created to heighten awareness of the poor among us, and ultimately, to raise money to benefit the citizens of our community living in poverty.
At the event, we distributed free water bottles and granola bars for race participants and church patrons. Our table also included information and resources on economic security for seniors, including ways to apply for benefits like Medicaid and Food Stamps.
In the end, dozens of people gathered for their daily dose of physical fitness and contributed generously – and as a result of the event, the St. Vincent de Paul society raised over $7,000. UNIMED was honored to be a part of a purpose-driven community event.
